Mon, 09/09/2024 - 3:30pm Athens Seminars Title: Clear as mud: Molecular insights to landscape patterns of soil carbon in coastal wetlands Abstract: Coastal wetlands support many valuable ecosystem services, including rapid and efficient soil carbon burial. Understanding the processes controlling soil carbon preservation (or loss) is therefore important for ascertaining the role of coastal wetlands in a changing carbon cycle, identifying high-functioning systems for conservation, and designing effective restoration approaches. In this talk I will discuss several key processes affecting carbon storage – local hydrology, redox conditions, and plant-mineral-microbe interactions – and how they operate in wetlands with organic-rich (PIE-LTER) and mineral (GCE-LTER) soils.
