Community efforts are central to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Many systemic biases exist in STEM that cannot easily be broken down by individual action alone. Community building represents a multitude of activities, including: mentoring of diverse trainees, sharing information and resources in a transparent and accessible manner, building and maintaining long-term relationships that help achieve DEI goals, fostering open and transparent discussions (especially about difficult topics), and taking part in collective actions which promote a sense of belonging and purpose. These community efforts can take place at many different levels and geographic scales (e.g. within labs, departments, institutions, or international professional societies). Regardless of community membership and reach, it is important to establish a safe and inclusive environment that incorporates regular feedback and addresses any potentially inappropriate behaviors and language.
