Title: Dune plant ecophysiology, oyster spat settlement patterns, and undergraduate research opportunities in barrier island ecosystems

Abstract: In this seminar, Tom will discuss his work with dune plants growing on North Carolina barrier islands, his experiences teaching at undergraduate institutions, how this led to a position at the Bald Head Island Conservancy, and eventually to Middle Georgia State University (MGA). Exposing students to coastal fieldwork has always been a priority for Tom and he will discuss how he has been able to involve undergraduates in multiple projects. Tom was introduced to UGAMI when he began including Sapelo Island as a field trip destination and research site for MGA students. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of current educational and research opportunities available through UGAMI.
