Dr. Renato Mendes, a Researcher at +ATLANTIC CoLAB and Faculty of Engineering at University of Porto, will present his work entitled Working in the intersection of Marine Science and Robotics: Challenges of Interdisciplinary Research. Here is an abstract for his research talk: The interdisciplinary projects require a trustful dialogue between ocean scientists and engineers. Most marine technology developments continue to lack scientific aims, and, on the other hand, scientists know little and are skeptical about the relevance of autonomous robots to ocean observation. This “new way of doing marine science” will revolutionize ocean observation in the short term. However, it is also necessary to adapt traditional methods and change mindsets to accommodate the state-of-the-art technologies in the ocean sciences. For example, marine scientists are not used to dealing with high-latency and fallible networks in traditional research cruises. That is one of several obstacles that ocean scientists will face when using robotics and autonomous vehicles. There is a need for an interdisciplinary approach to creating incremental scientific and engineering developments in closing development cycles around lessons learned from field studies to be performed in the future. A future where scientists can guide multiple autonomous assets and access their data near-real-time from shore with research vessel support is becoming an option.
