First Article for Hilde Oliver's Doctoral Research Published

Hilde Oliver's article titled "Exploring the Potential Impact of Greenland Meltwater on Stratification, Photosynthetically Active Radiation, and Primary Production in the Labrador Sea" was published in AGU's Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans today! The article focused on the impact of the unprecedented increased melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet on marine phytoplankton. For the complete article and abstract, you can check it out here. 

Student- run Club Takes a Monstrous Stand

The UGA Ocean Initiative Club is a student-run club that meets in the Marine Science building. This week, their aim was to bring attention to waste students discard in areas on and around campus. The plastic pollution in our oceans has been a growing problem, so these student took a very creative approach to bringing more attention to the issue. Lizzy Ashley, president of the club, stated: "Our goal was to highlight some of the plastics and other disposable items commonly seen around campus. We'd like to see students at UGA adopt reusable bags, bottles, straws, etc.

Graduate Student Awarded NSF Fellowship

Jeremy Schreier is the latest of our grad students to be awarded the 2018 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship! Jeremy has demonstrated a dedication to the U.S. science and engineering enterprise- which is a major factor NSF uses in determining candidates. From all of us in the Marine Science Department- congratulations, Jeremy!

Mary Ann Moran Receives SEC Faculty Achievement Award

Mary Ann Moran is on a roll for 2018! In addition to her previously reported appointment to Regents' Professor, Mary Ann has also been honored with the SEC Faculty Achievement Award. According to UGAToday, "The SEC award, which is administered by provosts at the 14 universities in the conference, recognizes professors with outstanding records in teaching and scholarship who serve as role models for students and other faculty members.
